Everglades Wildfire Balloons to 19,200 Acres as Smoke Spreads Across South Florida

Overview

  • The Mile Marker 39 fire surged from about 1,600 acres to 19,200 acres as of Aug. 20 and remained 0% contained, according to the Florida Forest Service.
  • The nearby Sawgrass Fire held at roughly 250 acres with no containment reported.
  • Thick smoke reduced visibility and pushed east into populated areas, with the National Weather Service cautioning drivers about rapidly changing conditions.
  • Air quality in Broward was rated Unhealthy on Wednesday morning with an AQI of 154 in Hollywood, then forecast to Moderate on Thursday, and sensitive groups were urged to limit outdoor activity.
  • Officials said the cause of the fires is unknown, and smoke impacts may extend into parts of Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties.
