Evanston Township High School Closes After Ransomware Attack

The district paused on-campus operations to restore systems and is working with the FBI and outside cyber experts.

Overview

  • School officials said the ransomware-style incident was discovered on Sunday and prompted ETHS to shut down operations while investigators work to restore systems.
  • Phone lines, staff email, internet access and family-facing tools including the Home Access Center were disrupted, blocking routine school communications and access to grades and schedules.
  • ETHS activated its incident response plan, hired external cyber breach attorneys and forensic firms, and confirmed the FBI is investigating the breach.
  • The district closed campus for Monday and Tuesday and canceled summer school classes, sports camps and other on-site activities with a plan to reopen Wednesday, according to school notices.
  • Officials said they have not yet determined who carried out the attack or whether any data were taken, and the investigation will decide what information, if any, was accessed while recovery continues.
