Evanston ER Shooting Suspect Ordered Held After Court Hearing

A judge ordered Haywood held without bail pending his July 3 status hearing.

Overview

  • Christian Haywood was brought to Endeavor Health Evanston’s ER on June 5 by the non-police Crisis Alternative Response Evanston team after showing signs of mental distress.
  • During intake, he fired at least three shots through his backpack at a 33-year-old security guard, wounding her arm and leg; the guard remains in stable condition after surgery, and Haywood also bit a second guard while being subdued.
  • Police recovered a second firearm and a bulletproof vest in Haywood’s backpack following the incident.
  • Cook County prosecutors charged him with attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated battery against a public safety officer and two misdemeanor weapons offenses.
  • The hospital went on lockdown after the shooting and city officials have launched an independent review of emergency room security measures.
