Evacuations Expand in B.C. Interior as Coquihalla Reopens After Truck Fire

Forecast lightning with gusty winds threatens new ignitions.

Overview

  • Ulkatcho First Nation and the Cariboo Regional District ordered residents around Anahim Lake, Nimpo Lake and Charlotte Lake to leave immediately and travel east on Highway 20 to Williams Lake for support.
  • The Beef Trail Creek wildfire has grown past 100 square kilometres and the Dusty Lake fire is about 53 square kilometres, driving orders that cover hundreds of properties in the region.
  • The Coquihalla Highway reopened after a multi‑day wildfire closure and a subsequent semi‑truck fire, with no stopping allowed in the fire zone and warnings of intermittent lane closures and possible short‑notice shutdowns.
  • Environment Canada’s Special Air Quality statement remains in effect for most of the province as smoke degrades conditions and public‑health officials advise limiting time outdoors.
  • The BC Wildfire Service reports roughly 140 active fires with more than 50 out of control and cautions that heavy smoke may disrupt aircraft operations as the risk of lightning‑caused starts increases.
