Overview

  • Regional officials downgraded evacuation orders for Headquarters Bay Recreation Community and China Creek Campground and Marina to alerts, and lifted several alerts including Cameron Heights, Tiipis/Polly’s Point and parts of Electoral Area F.
  • The wildfire remains out of control at about 3,600 hectares, with fire behaviour mostly rank 1 to 2 after roughly 36 millimetres of rain.
  • Roughly 160 personnel, supported by helicopters and heavy equipment, are focused on perimeter mop-up to extinguish hot spots and guard against flare-ups later this week.
  • Environment Canada issued a special air quality statement warning that localized smoke may periodically affect Port Alberni and surrounding communities.
  • BC Hydro reports 56 power poles destroyed and about 70 spans of line to be restrung, with crews progressing toward a targeted Aug. 30 restoration for Bamfield and nearby First Nations.
