Evacuation Lifted for Musgrave Harbour as Wildfires Remain Uncontained

The provincial government lifted the evacuation order following rain-driven containment gains, leaving crews to continue managing hotspots under RCMP checkpoints.

There are two active wildfires on the island portion of the province in Musgrave Harbour and Chance Harbour. A third fire is burning in Labrador.
Provincial fire duty officer Wes Morgan says firefighting efforts will continue Tuesday against the Chance Harbour and Musgrave Harbour fires.

Overview

  • Residents of Musgrave Harbour were allowed to return to their homes on Friday afternoon but are advised to remain cautious around active fire zones.
  • The Ragged Harbour fire has held at 1,660 hectares about two kilometres from town, with ground crews, helicopters and water bombers still tackling hotspots along its northern edge.
  • On the Bonavista Peninsula, the Chance Harbour blaze remains stable at 1,820 hectares, yet deep peat fires continue to resist full extinguishment.
  • About 30 millimetres of recent rainfall have improved crew access but drought-altered soils and underground smouldering persist, delaying full containment.
  • RCMP checkpoints on Route 330 remain in place and a precautionary water non-consumption advisory is active until testing confirms a safe drinking supply.
