EV Market Realigns: Norway at 97% BEV, Germany Rebounds as Tesla Slides

Analysts attribute the gains to discounts and policy effects rather than a lasting boom.

Overview

  • Norway’s August new-car market was 97% battery-electric, with Tesla leading at roughly 22% share, according to OFV data reported by t3n.
  • Germany’s KBA reported overall August registrations up about 5% year over year, with pure EVs up 45.7% and reaching a 19% share of new cars.
  • Tesla’s German registrations fell to 1,441 in August, down 39% year over year, bringing the January–August total to 11,441, a 56% decline versus 2024.
  • The refreshed Model Y “Juniper” has not reversed Tesla’s slide in Europe, with only about 3,500 Model Y registrations in Germany from April to July, less than half the prior year’s volume.
  • Chinese brands expanded in Europe, with BYD more than tripling registrations in Norway and BYD and Leapmotor posting strong August gains in Germany, while Bloomberg reported Tesla logged about 600 orders since July in India amid price and tariff hurdles.
