Europe’s Wildfires Double Season Averages as Extreme Risk Persists

Forecasts of above-average September temperatures threaten to extend the season’s extreme fire conditions.

Overview

  • The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre reports 439,568 hectares burned year-to-date—over twice the 19-year average—with 1,628 large fires and about 14.11 Mt of CO₂ emissions.
  • A nearly two-week heatwave and ‘extreme to very extreme’ seven-day fire-weather outlooks have fueled concurrent blazes in Spain, Greece, Portugal and the Balkans.
  • At least three people, including two volunteer firefighters, have died in Spanish wildfires this week and thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate.
  • EU Civil Protection activations have sent mutual aid assets—such as two French water-bombers to Spain—and law enforcement has detained more than 30 suspects in arson and negligence investigations.
  • EFFIS and regional data show Spain burning over 70,000 ha in recent days and significant fires also burning in northern England’s North Yorkshire.
