Europe’s Gas Storage Slips Below 50% as Withdrawal Pace Eases

A forecast cold snap could strain inventories by lifting near-term demand.

Overview

  • GIE data show inventories at 55.1 bcm, equal to 49.84% filled, about 14.66 percentage points below the five-year norm and below 61% a year earlier.
  • Since the October 13 start of the heating season, EU countries have withdrawn roughly 41 bcm in total, with net withdrawals exceeding 36.5 bcm.
  • Daily offtake on January 20 was about 607 million cubic meters, and the month’s cumulative pull has slowed to the fourth-highest for January.
  • On the 98th day after peak fill, cumulative withdrawals stand about 6.5% below the five-year average for that date.
  • Average gas purchase prices have risen to about $370 per 1,000 cubic meters in January from $334 in December, while wind’s share of EU power slipped from 20% in December to 19% in January.
