Europe’s Auto Sales Dip While Electrified Models Gain Ground

High borrowing costs combined with stricter CO₂ limits steer buyers into record electric vehicle adoption in a contracting market.

Overview

  • EU new vehicle registrations fell 1.9% in the first half to about 5.6 million units as high interest rates and economic uncertainty dampened demand.
  • Battery-electric vehicles accounted for a 15.6% market share with 869,271 registrations, marking a 22% year-on-year rise that eased to 15% growth in June.
  • Non-plug-in hybrids emerged as the leading segment at 34.1% of sales with 1.94 million registrations, overtaking petrol and diesel models.
  • In June the Renault Clio returned to the top of Europe’s monthly sales chart with 26,986 units (up 20.9%) while the Tesla Model Y rebounded to second with 22,513 deliveries (up 5.2%).
  • Chinese automakers doubled their European market share to 5.1% in the first half, intensifying competition for established manufacturers.
