Overview
- New-car registrations increased 4.7% across Europe in August to over 791,000, with the EU up 5.3% as year-to-date totals edged up 0.4% in Europe and slipped 0.1% in the EU.
- Hybrid models reached a 34.7% share with 2,485,069 EU registrations in the first eight months, while plug-in hybrids rose to 8.8% and posted strong gains, including a 54.5% year-on-year jump in August.
- Battery-electric cars accounted for 15.8% of EU registrations year to date with 1,132,603 units, helped by increases in Germany (+39.2%), Belgium (+14.4%) and the Netherlands (+5.1%), as France declined 2% despite a strong August.
- Petrol and diesel fell to a combined 37.5% share in the EU, with petrol registrations down 19.7% and diesel down 25.7% year to date and August declines of 16.3% and 17.5% respectively.
- Manufacturer performances diverged in August: Volkswagen +6.3%, Renault +8.1%, BMW +8.5% and Mercedes +1.35%, with Stellantis up 3.4% in the EU but down 8.9% year to date, Tesla down 36.6%, and China’s SAIC and BYD surging (+59.4% and over +200%).
