European Space Agency Makes History with First Livestream from Mars

  • The European Space Agency streamed the first ever live images from Mars to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its Mars Express orbiter launching.
  • Images from Mars Express' Visual Monitoring Camera were shown roughly every 50 seconds for a hourlong event.
  • The livestream overcame an 18-minute delay for signals to travel between Mars and Earth.
  • Occasional disruptions occurred when rain interfered with transmissions from the deep space antenna receiving data from Mars.
  • The images revealed incredible views of the Martian surface as the orbiter circled the planet.
