Overview
- MEPs voted down the Left’s censure motion by 383 to 133 with 78 abstentions and rejected the Patriots’ motion by 378 to 179 with 37 abstentions.
- The challenges, filed by The Left and the Patriots, faulted von der Leyen over the EU–US tariffs deal, the Mercosur agreement, alleged inaction on Gaza, and what the far right called wrong green policies.
- Socialists & Democrats, Renew Europe, and the Greens declined to back censure, the ECR allowed a free vote, and turnout rose to 594 MEPs, yielding broader margins than a failed July bid.
- Italian delegations split as M5S backed both motions, most of the Lega abstained on The Left’s text, Fratelli d’Italia abstained on the Patriots’ and opposed The Left’s, PD and Forza Italia opposed censure, and 13 Greens voted for, including the full Italian Green contingent.
- Von der Leyen thanked supporters on X and said the Commission will keep working for citizens and values, while she skipped the Strasbourg vote to attend the Global Gateway Forum.
