European Parliament Rejects Twin Censure Bids Against Von der Leyen

The failed bids underscored the two-thirds threshold that keeps the Commission secure.

Overview

  • Patriotas por Europa's motion drew 179 votes in favor, 378 against and 37 abstentions, while The Left's motion received 133 in favor, 383 against and 78 abstentions.
  • Both efforts fell far short of the 396 votes needed from 594 cast to force the Commission's resignation under Parliament's two-thirds rule.
  • The sponsors targeted the Commission's handling of a tariff-avoidance accord with the United States and the EUMercosur trade pact, with The Left also citing inaction on Gaza.
  • Pro‑European centrists from the EPP, S&D, Renew and Greens largely held the line, though a small number of MEPs defected in each vote.
  • This was the third censure attempt against von der Leyen since summer; she skipped the vote after a conciliatory appearance on Monday as figures like Vox's Jorge Buxadé and Comuns' Jaume Asens framed the bids as symbolic.
