European Electric Vehicle Sales Decline in 2024 Despite Overall Market Growth

Battery-electric vehicle registrations dropped 6% in the EU, with reduced subsidies and competition from China contributing to the decline.

  • Overall car sales in Europe rose by 0.8% in 2024, totaling 10.6 million units, driven largely by growth in hybrid vehicle registrations.
  • Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) saw a 6% decrease in sales in the EU, falling to 1.44 million units and dropping their market share from 14.6% in 2023 to 13.6%.
  • Germany and France experienced significant BEV sales declines of 38.6% and 20.7% respectively in December, following reductions in government subsidies.
  • Chinese EV exports to the EU grew by 8.3% in December despite new tariffs; Chinese automakers increased their presence, challenging European manufacturers.
  • Hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) experienced double-digit growth, capturing 30.9% of the market, while petrol vehicles remained the most popular choice at 33.3% market share.
