The EU has come under fierce pressure to delay enforcing its landmark AI law

Overview

  • The European Commission published its final General-Purpose AI Code of Practice on July 10 as a voluntary framework to support compliance with the EU AI Act.
  • Thirteen independent experts compiled the code after consulting roughly 1,000 stakeholders from industry, academia, civil society and member states.
  • The code outlines best practices for transparency in model documentation, adherence to copyright law and safety measures for the most advanced AI systems.
  • Under the AI Act, general-purpose AI rules will apply from August 2 with enforcement beginning in mid-2026 for new models and mid-2027 for existing ones.
  • Nearly 50 major European firms urged a two-year delay over concerns about regulatory complexity and competitiveness, but the Commission refused to postpone implementation.
