European Central Bank Unveils Themes for Redesigned Euro Banknotes

The new designs will feature prominent European figures or natural motifs, with final selection expected in 2026.

The European Central Bank (ECB) has announced two design themes for its upcoming Euro banknote redesign: 'European Culture' and 'Flora and Fauna.'
The 'European Culture' theme will highlight cross-border figures like Beethoven, Marie Curie, and Leonardo da Vinci, alongside depictions of everyday cultural scenes.
The 'Flora and Fauna' theme will feature European birds such as the kingfisher and gannet, paired with stylized representations of rivers and EU institution buildings.
A design competition will be held in 2025, with the final decision on the new banknote designs to be made by the ECB in 2026.
The redesigned banknotes are expected to incorporate enhanced security features and eco-friendly materials, with circulation planned for several years from now.
