European Auto Sales Hold Steady in April as EV Uptake Rises and Tesla Sales Slump

Overview

  • European auto registrations in Western Europe declined by 0.3% in April and 0.4% in the first four months of 2025 versus 2024, leaving volumes 18.8% below pre-pandemic 2019 levels.
  • Battery electric vehicles climbed 26.4% in January-April to 558,262 units and hybrids rose 20.8%, accounting for 15.3% and 35.3% of EU sales respectively.
  • Tesla’s European deliveries plunged 52.6% in April to 5,475 units, trimming its continent-wide market share to 0.6% and relegating the Model Y to ninth place.
  • Škoda’s Elroq emerged as April’s top battery electric seller with 8,070 registrations in its first full month, while Volkswagen’s ID.3, ID.7 and ID.4 filled the next three spots.
  • Registrations of Chinese brands BYD, MG and Leapmotor jumped 59% year-on-year in April, underscoring their growing influence in Europe’s electrified market.
