Europe Triggers 30-Day UN Sanctions Snapback on Iran

The action opens a 30-day window that ends with automatic restoration of past UN measures unless the Security Council blocks it.

Overview

  • The UK, France and Germany formally notified the Security Council, starting the snapback process that would reinstate six prior Iran resolutions if no preserving resolution is adopted within 30 days.
  • E3 foreign ministers cited what they called clear, deliberate JCPOA breaches by Iran, including excess enriched uranium, heavy water and centrifuges, and restricted IAEA verification.
  • Tehran condemned the step as illegal, warned it will undermine cooperation with the IAEA, and told the EU’s Kaja Kallas it is prepared to resume “fair and balanced” nuclear talks.
  • Iran’s parliament initiated a procedure to consider quitting the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, suspending the Additional Protocol, ending talks with the E3 and the United States, and halting cooperation with the IAEA.
  • Germany urged its citizens to leave Iran citing possible reprisals and limited consular help, the UN chief called the 30 days a chance for diplomacy, the United States welcomed the E3 move, and Russia and China criticized it.
