Overview
- Deputy-level negotiators from Iran, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and the EU met in Geneva for fresh discussions on Tehran’s nuclear program.
- France, Britain and Germany have warned they could trigger the UN snapback as soon as late August, with the authority for automatic reinstatement of sanctions set to lapse on October 18.
- In July the E3 offered to delay snapback if Tehran resumed talks with the United States, restored full IAEA access and accounted for more than 400 kilograms of highly enriched uranium, an offer Iran rejected.
- The IAEA has reported enrichment up to 60% and a total uranium stockpile exceeding 9,200 kilograms, far above JCPOA limits.
- Iran called on the E3 and the UN Security Council to make the “right decision,” maintains its program is civilian, disputes Europe’s right to reimpose sanctions and has threatened to leave the NPT if snapback proceeds.
