Europe Sets September LNG Record and Accelerates Storage Builds as TurkStream Stays Key Route

Europe’s supply picture tilts toward LNG, with regional strategies balancing diversification and ongoing Russian contracts.

Overview

  • EU LNG receipts reached roughly 11.6 bcm in September, up 15% from August and 50% year over year, as total January–September LNG imports rose 27% to about 107.9 bcm, Bruegel data show.
  • Gas Infrastructure Europe reported around 11.4 bcm flowed from LNG terminals to the EU grid in September and roughly 70 bcm was imported since April, setting seasonal highs.
  • European underground storage saw net injections of 6.74 bcm in September, lifting inventories to about 82.66% by month‑end and pushing summer‑season injections past 54 bcm toward a 90% target.
  • ENTSOG-based calculations indicate Russian pipeline deliveries via TurkStream to Europe rose about 7% in January–September to roughly 13 bcm, the only active direct pipeline route after Ukrainian transit ceased.
  • Serbia is adding Azerbaijani volumes at 2.5 mcm per day for the heating season even as officials note continued heavy reliance on Russian gas, and Turkey’s energy minister said purchases from Russia will continue alongside other contracted sources.
