Overview

  • The United Kingdom, France and Germany, backed by the United States, have formalized an end-August ultimatum to invoke the JCPOA’s Chapter VII snapback if Iran fails to make verifiable nuclear commitments.
  • Under the 2015 deal’s snapback mechanism, six UN Security Council resolutions on enrichment, reprocessing, arms embargoes and financial restrictions would automatically return after a 30-day activation period.
  • Iran’s parliament has ruled out resuming nuclear talks without preconditions, demanding guarantees against future military strikes following US and Israeli operations.
  • Tehran has halted International Atomic Energy Agency inspections and warned of accelerating uranium enrichment to weapons-grade levels if UN sanctions are reinstated.
  • Western diplomats aim to conclude the snapback process before Russia assumes the rotating UN Security Council presidency in October to avoid a potential veto.
