Eugen Gomringer, Pioneer of Concrete Poetry, Dies at 100

His pared-down 'Konstellationen' transformed postwar lyric practice, with 'avenidas' later at the center of a public dispute.

Overview

  • His son Stefan said he died on Thursday in Bamberg at the age of 100.
  • Widely regarded as a founder of concrete poetry, he published the trilingual debut "konstellationen constellations constelaciones" in 1953.
  • Born in Bolivia and raised in Switzerland, he spent most of his life in Germany, serving as secretary to Max Bill, culture officer at Rosenthal, and professor of aesthetics in Düsseldorf from 1977 to 1990.
  • His poem "avenidas" was painted over at Berlin’s Alice Salomon Hochschule in 2018 after sexism complaints, then appeared on walls elsewhere, including in Rehau.
  • He marked his centenary with an exhibition in Rehau in January, and in 2019 he placed his papers in the Swiss Literary Archive in Bern.
