Overview
- The European Commission is discussing adding an accelerated ban on Russian liquefied natural gas to the EU’s 19th sanctions package, an EU official said.
- The renewed push followed a call this week between Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and U.S. President Donald Trump.
- Trump urged Europe to hit Russia’s energy revenues more forcefully, including by stopping purchases of Russian oil and imposing tariffs on China and India.
- Separately, the EU is negotiating a full phase-out of Russian oil and gas by Jan. 1, 2028, with a ban on short-term contracts set to begin next year.
- The Commission plans to present the draft sanctions package to EU member states on Friday.
