EU Warns of 'Another Genocide' in Darfur Amid Escalating Violence

Over a Thousand Masalit Civilians Reportedly Killed in Major Attacks by Rapid Support Forces and Allied Militias

  • Violence in Sudan's Darfur region has escalated, with the European Union warning of the risk of 'another genocide'.
  • The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary and allied Arab militias are accused of conducting an ethnic cleansing campaign against the non-Arab Masalit community in West Darfur.
  • Over a thousand members of the Masalit community were reportedly killed in Ardamta, West Darfur, in just over two days during major attacks by the RSF and its affiliated militias.
  • Since April, forces loyal to army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan have been at war with the RSF commanded by his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
  • The RSF and allied Arab militias conducted weeks of systematic attacks on Masalit people between April and June 2023.
