EU, UN Condemn U.S. Greenland Push as Denmark Reports No Shift and Germany Sends Recon Team

The White House has kept military action among the options for asserting control over the island.

Overview

  • After meetings in Washington, Denmark said it could not persuade the United States to abandon its position and declared there is no necessity for any U.S. seizure of Greenland.
  • President Donald Trump said he expects the United States and Denmark will ultimately reach an arrangement but refused to rule out any options, and he did not join the ministers’ talks.
  • Leaders of the European Parliament denounced the U.S. statements as a gross challenge to international law and urged EU institutions to prepare concrete support for Denmark and Greenland.
  • Seven UN experts warned that claims over Greenland echo colonial logic and risk undermining UN Charter principles, including territorial integrity and the prohibition on the use of force.
  • Germany will send 13 Bundeswehr personnel to Nuuk for a 15–17 January reconnaissance mission at Denmark’s invitation, with Bild reporting coordination from Copenhagen rather than NATO to avoid U.S. involvement, and France voiced full solidarity as AFP said President Emmanuel Macron will convene a defense council session on the issue.
