Overview

  • On June 24, the EU Parliament’s transport committee approved a proposal allowing passengers to carry one cabin bag weighing up to 7kg in the overhead locker plus a smaller personal item at no extra charge.
  • If enacted, the rule would cover all flights to and from EU member states, including routes connecting the EU with non-EU countries such as the UK.
  • The package also bans seat selection fees for children under 12 and introduces a standardized form for compensation and reimbursement requests.
  • Before taking effect, the proposal must be ratified by at least 55% of EU member states representing 65% of the EU population.
  • Airlines for Europe warned that limited overhead storage could disrupt boarding and prompt carriers to raise ticket prices to recoup lost baggage fee revenue.
