Overview
- From June 20, smartphones and tablets sold in the EU must carry a colored energy label showing efficiency class, battery life, drop resistance, repairability and dust and water protection.
- The label details battery performance in hours per full charge and number of cycles until capacity falls to 80 percent.
- Manufacturers are required to supply critical spare parts within five to ten working days for seven years after a model’s sale ends.
- Software updates must be offered for at least five years following the last sale of a device model.
- The EU expects these measures to lower energy consumption and CO₂ emissions while a comparable label for laptops is scheduled for 2028.
