Overview
- The EU confirmed that its automated Entry/Exit System will roll out in stages from 12 October 2025 and reach full operation by 10 April 2026, ending routine passport stamps.
- Non-EU nationals will undergo fingerprint and facial scans on first entry into the Schengen Area, with subsequent crossings typically requiring only a facial biometric.
- To manage queue times, only a fraction of border posts and selected travellers will be processed by EES during the initial phase, with progressive activation across member states.
- UK departure hubs—including Dover, Folkestone and St Pancras—are installing self-service biometric booths funded by the Foreign Office as border agencies train staff on the new system.
- Officials and travel-industry experts have refuted claims that medical insurance proof is an EU mandate, although officers may still request evidence of funds, accommodation or onward travel.
