EU Seeks G7-Wide Response to China’s New Rare-Earth Tech Export Curbs

Trade chief Maros Sefcovic says the plan aims to ease pressure on European manufacturers hit by the measures.

Overview

  • Following a ministerial meeting in Denmark on Oct. 14, Maros Sefcovic said the EU will bring the issue to the G7 for coordinated action.
  • Beijing announced new restrictions last week on exports of technologies linked to rare earths, which Sefcovic said have already forced some European firms to suspend production.
  • European buyers are being required to submit detailed authorization requests that describe production processes with photographic documentation and full supply-chain information.
  • The European Commission says it remains in close contact with G7 partners and with Chinese authorities as it evaluates the most appropriate collective response.
  • China, the world’s largest producer of rare earths, has enforced a licensing system for certain exports since April that has already disrupted multiple sectors globally.
