EU Reopens to Brazilian Poultry With Staged Resumption

The move follows Brazil’s OMSA-recognized return to avian influenza–free status.

Overview

  • Imports resume for products produced from September 18, with Rio Grande do Sul (outside the outbreak site) cleared from October 2 and the 10 km zone around the affected farm from October 16.
  • The European Union had halted purchases on May 16 after a confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza case in a commercial flock in Montenegro, Rio Grande do Sul.
  • EU Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi communicated the reauthorization to Brazil’s agriculture minister, Carlos Fávaro, following months of technical exchanges.
  • The EU is a significant destination for Brazilian poultry, accounting for roughly 7% of export volume, or 130,985 tonnes and US$409.2 million from January to August 2025.
  • Exports remain suspended to Canada, China, Malaysia, Pakistan and Timor-Leste, and Chinese inspectors have begun an on-site audit of Brazil’s controls that will inform decisions on reopening that market.
