EU Reopens Market to Argentine Fresh Poultry

The move opens use of the Mercosur poultry quota, restoring access to high‑standard buyers in the Netherlands, Spain and Germany.

Overview

  • The European Union published Implementing Regulation 1813/2026 on July 28, formally recognizing Argentina as free of highly pathogenic avian influenza and authorizing fresh poultry exports to resume.
  • Shipments may restart on August 17, when the regulation becomes effective and Argentine exporters can begin sending fresh poultry and fresh poultry products to EU markets.
  • EU authorities based the decision on Argentina’s recovery of IAAP-free status under OIE/WOAH recommendations after coordinated containment and eradication efforts by SENASA, SAGyP, the Cancillería and the poultry industry.
  • The reopening lets Argentina seek fuller use of the Mercosur–EU poultry quota and regain access to high-value buyers, which industry leaders say will help restore export volumes and prices.
  • The decision follows repeated disruptions from HPAI outbreaks in 2025 and early 2026 that had limited exports to cooked products, and it comes as Argentina looks to recover more than US$14 million in EU poultry sales recorded in 2025.
