EU Prosecutor Presses Spain’s Supreme Court to Identify Contracts in Cerdán–Ábalos Probe

The move seeks to determine whether EU financing is involved, which could shift the investigation to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Overview

  • The European Public Prosecutor’s Office sent a formal request dated September 24 asking Justice Leopoldo Puente to specify, “without delay,” the contracts, awards or subsidies under investigation.
  • EPPO says it needs this list to decide if EU funds financed any of the questioned projects, which would give the EU body jurisdiction.
  • The Supreme Court inquiry currently examines 11 public-works contracts linked to Adif and the Directorate-General for Roads from the Ábalos tenure, with an overall value near €400 million.
  • Projects under scrutiny include rail works in Sant Feliú de Llobregat and Murcia, the Pulpí–Vera high-speed corridor in Almería, maintenance in Lugo, and emergency stabilization works in Asturias.
  • The court earlier rejected an EPPO bid to take over the related masks strand, and Judge Puente has now separated that advanced piece from the ongoing public-works case, which cites UCO recordings indicating possible irregular adjudications; defenses contest aspects of the evidence.
