Overview

  • The working group was approved on June 19 by a coalition of the European People’s Party, European Conservatives and Reformists and Patriots for Europe in the budget committee.
  • Members will be assigned dedicated staff to audit grant agreements and examine detailed contractual clauses governing NGO activities.
  • A whistleblower has alleged that the Commission directed millions of euros to NGOs to push the Green Deal and other policy objectives.
  • Greens and Left-wing MEPs have condemned the inquiry as a politically driven effort to weaken environmental and human rights advocacy groups.
  • In response to mounting scrutiny, the EU Commission has introduced new internal guidelines aimed at enhancing transparency in its funding of NGOs, following recommendations from the European Court of Auditors.
