Overview
- New car registrations in the EU rose 1.6 percent in May 2025 after a 1.3 percent increase in April, marking the second straight month of growth.
- Hybrid vehicles commanded the largest segment with a 35.1 percent share and battery-electric models grew their share from 12.1 percent to 15.4 percent year-on-year.
- Germany (+43.2 percent), Belgium (+26.7 percent) and the Netherlands (+6.7 percent) drove battery-electric growth while France saw a 7.1 percent decline.
- Plug-in hybrids reached an 8.2 percent market share, propelled by year-to-date surges of 52.8 percent in Germany and 66.6 percent in Spain.
- Combined petrol and diesel registrations fell to a 38.1 percent share as petrol sales dropped 20.2 percent and diesel declined 26.6 percent year-to-date.
