EU Names Greece, Cyprus, Spain and Italy for Migration Support Under New Solidarity Pool
Solidarity is compulsory under the pact, with capitals choosing relocation, financial contributions or other support.
Overview
- The European Commission formally designated Greece, Cyprus, Spain and Italy as under migratory pressure, making them eligible for assistance when the pact takes effect in mid-2026.
- Under the solidarity mechanism, member states must provide help but may choose between taking in asylum seekers, paying into the scheme or offering alternative measures.
- Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, France, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland and Finland were labeled at risk of pressure and will receive priority access to the EU’s Migration Support Toolbox.
- Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia, Croatia, Austria and Poland were recognized as facing significant migratory situations over five years and can request full or partial rebates from their contributions.
- Brussels also announced a €250 million tender for drone and anti-drone capabilities and said negotiations to make the designations legally binding will begin in the coming weeks, with the Council set to decide and a hearing by Commissioner Magnus Brunner scheduled.
