Overview
- Energy ministers endorsed the Commission’s plan to end all Russian gas imports by the close of 2027, with Hungary and Slovakia opposing but outvoted.

- Parliament’s Industry and Trade committees back a blanket prohibition on pipeline and LNG supplies starting 1 January 2026 with limited exceptions.
- The Commission earlier floated a 2027 end-date for gas and proposed bringing the LNG deadline forward to end-2026 within the EU’s 19th sanctions package.
- EU purchases of Russian gas are projected at about €15 billion this year, and Russia still accounted for 19% of EU gas imports in 2024, down from 45% in 2021.
