Overview
- From June 20, 2025, all new smartphones and tablets sold in the EU must receive at least five years of functional software updates and seven years of security patches from end of sale.
- Manufacturers are required to supply batteries, displays, cameras and other common replacement parts for seven years and publish clear online repair manuals that enable fixes with standard tools.
- A new EU label will rate devices on energy efficiency, durability, repairability and dust and water resistance to guide consumer choices.
- Smartphone batteries must retain at least 80 percent capacity after 800 charge cycles and devices must meet strengthened drop, scratch and ingress protection standards.
- Devices with flexible displays and those for high-security communication are exempt, and replacement parts must ship within five working days for the first five years and ten days in years six and seven after sale.
