Overview

  • Leaders from five EU countries, including the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Germany and the Netherlands, have made a joint appeal urging increased military support for Ukraine amid concerns over diminishing public support for Ukraine's war effort.
  • The EU's plans to produce 1 million artillery rounds for Ukraine have fallen short, with only about a third of the target met.
  • EU leaders are set to gather to discuss their support for Ukraine and overcoming Hungary’s veto of a long-term financial aid package worth $54 billion to help prop-up the Ukrainian economy.
  • Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban remains opposed to the aid package, citing concerns about ongoing Russian aggression and insisting that the money should not come out of the EU’s budget.
  • If Orban continues to block the €50bn, it is possible that the other 26 member states will seek an alternative arrangement outside of the EU’s structures.
