Overview
- The European Commission announced on Tuesday that it will station nearly 800 firefighters from 14 countries in high-risk areas of Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal for the summer season.
- The deployment will be backed by 22 aircraft and five helicopters and will be coordinated and financed through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism with a 24/7 emergency coordination centre providing expert support.
- Officials described the operation as an act of European solidarity aimed at protecting people, homes and forests and said the effort responds to escalating fire risk across the continent.
- Separately, the EU has declared plans to develop a European regional firefighting station in Cyprus to build lasting capacity in the southern Mediterranean, though that project remains in development.
- The push follows a WMO and Copernicus report that more than one million hectares burned in Europe in 2025 and signals a shift toward pooled resources and sustained regional readiness that could shorten response times and limit future damage.
