Overview

  • The label has been mandatory on all new smartphones and tablets sold in the EU since June 20, 2025 to guide consumers toward more sustainable devices.
  • It displays energy efficiency from A to G, battery lifespan in hours and charge cycles, repairability class and protection against dust and moisture.
  • Manufacturers must guarantee availability of spare parts for at least seven years after purchase and supply software updates for a minimum of five years.
  • Apple’s iPhone 16 received a “B” grade and most iPad models dropped to “G” after the company voluntarily downgraded its ratings to account for ambiguous testing protocols.
  • The scheme underpins the EU’s circular economy plan to reduce electronic waste and CO₂ emissions, and a comparable label for laptops is slated for 2028.
