Overview
- Revised Hi-Scan 6040 CTiX software uses CT and 3D imaging to detect explosives without requiring liquids or electronics removal from hand luggage.
- The new rule applies immediately at airports such as Milan Malpensa, Linate, Fiumicino, Bergamo, Bologna, Catania and Turin, enabling single containers up to two liters.
- Other European airports must continue enforcing the 100-ml cap until they install ECAC-certified smart-security scanners.
- High acquisition and maintenance costs—up to eight times higher for units and four times higher for upkeep than legacy machines—have limited deployment to major hubs.
- Imposed in 2006 as a global security measure, the liquids cap is lifted at smart-security airports to accelerate passenger throughput and cut down on manual inspections.
