EU Demands Russia Cease Operations at Zaporizhzhia as IAEA Urges Repair Access

The occupied plant has run on emergency generators for over a week with fuel reported for more than ten days.

Overview

  • The plant remains disconnected from external power, relying solely on diesel generators for cooling and other safety functions more than a week after the outage.
  • IAEA reports the Sept. 23 damage to the last 750 kV line about 1.5 km from the site, marking the tenth full loss of grid connection since the invasion and the longest to date.
  • On-site status reported by IAEA: eight generators operating, nine on standby, three under maintenance, with fuel supplies sufficient for over ten days.
  • Energoatom says the line on Ukrainian-controlled territory is intact and accuses Russian forces of blocking reconnection, which Moscow’s occupation authority rejects.
  • The occupation administration told the IAEA it cannot carry out repairs because of fighting, while the EU urged Russia to stop military activity near the plant and withdraw its forces.
