EU Consumer Tests Find Most Shein and Temu Items Unsafe

The findings intensify calls for tighter oversight under the Digital Services Act.

Overview

  • UFC-Que Choisir and partner groups tested 162 low‑price items and found 69% non‑compliant with EU rules and 57% posing a real risk to users.
  • USB chargers were the most problematic, with 52 of 54 non‑compliant, several showing risky high‑low voltage layouts and many overheating above allowed temperatures, including one reaching 102°C.
  • Half of the toys examined had small parts that detached too easily, some battery compartments opened too readily, and formaldehyde levels reached 143–164 mg/kg versus a 30 mg/kg limit.
  • Several jewelry pieces contained excessive toxic metals, including one item with cadmium up to 8,500 times the permitted level.
  • Shein says it removed and recalled the flagged products globally and Temu says it withdrew the items and informed sellers, while consumer groups warn unsafe listings can reappear and similar products remain available.
