Overview
- Eu-LISA has set the Entry-Exit System to begin on October 12, 2025, with full implementation across all Schengen external borders by April 9, 2026.
- Non-EU travellers will provide four fingerprints and a facial image at compliant border posts to digitise crossings and flag overstays beyond the 90-day limit.
- During the phased rollout, some checkpoints will still use manual passport stamping, creating mixed digital and analogue procedures for travellers.
- The European Travel Information and Authorisation System will start in the final quarter of 2026, requiring a €20 permit valid for up to three years.
- Travelers under 18 or over 70, along with certain family members of EU residents, are exempt from the ETIAS fee, even as longer queues are expected during initial implementation.
