EU Commission Proposes Letting Germany Avoid 2026 Migrant Relocations Under Asylum Pact

Brussels cites Germany’s heavy prior intake, crediting it as “responsibility offsets” ahead of the solidarity system’s June 2026 launch.

Overview

  • Germany is assessed as at risk of migration pressure, and the Commission proposes crediting past reception and Dublin cases so it would not take additional relocations or make alternative contributions in 2026.
  • Greece, Cyprus, Spain and Italy are formally designated as under migration pressure and eligible to receive relocations or other solidarity support.
  • Austria, Poland, Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia and Croatia are deemed in a pronounced migration situation and may seek partial or full exemption from solidarity duties through the end of 2026.
  • The solidarity mechanism under the 2024 asylum reform is set to begin in June 2026 with at least 30,000 annual relocations, with member states able to contribute via relocations, funding, personnel or projects.
  • Confidential country allocations now move to negotiations for member‑state approval, and resistance to mandatory redistribution persists, while Commissioner Magnus Brunner says irregular arrivals fell 35% year on year.
