EU Biometric Border Checks Begin Oct. 12 With Phased Rollout Across Schengen

France has signaled stricter entry checks that may require proof of funds, accommodation, a return ticket plus medical insurance.

Overview

  • The Entry/Exit System starts on October 12 with elements activated in stages and is scheduled to be fully operational by April 10, 2026, with passport stamping continuing during the transition.
  • First-time registration creates a three-year digital record and involves a facial image and, in many cases, fingerprints, though fingerprint capture will be introduced more broadly after launch; children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting.
  • UK departure points at Dover, Folkestone and London St Pancras will collect data before exit, with new kiosks already installed and a gradual onboarding at Eurostar that expands through December and January.
  • Travelers are advised to allow extra time at borders and ensure passports meet Schengen rules on issue date, validity and condition, with guidance to keep blank pages available during the rollout.
  • Border officials may ask standard Schengen questions on accommodation, return travel, funds and insurance, and travelers can be denied entry if they refuse biometrics or fail to meet requirements.
