Overview
- The prohibition, set out in Regulation (EU) 2025/877, has been in force across the bloc since 1 September 2025.
- TPO (trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide) and DMPT (dimethyltolylamine) are no longer allowed to be manufactured, marketed, or used in cosmetic nail products in the EU.
- ECHA classified both substances as CMR, with TPO identified as toxic for reproduction and DMPT flagged for potential carcinogenicity based largely on high-dose animal studies.
- Authorities and consumer groups advise checking INCI labels on existing products and discontinuing use of items listing TPO or DMPT.
- Industry prepared for the change, with TPO restricted to professional use since 2019 and DMPT largely phased out by 2023, leading many salons to switch to alternative photoinitiators.
