Overview
- The long-dormant Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia erupted for the first time in roughly 10,000 years, lofting ash to about 14 km (45,000 ft).
- India’s aviation regulator issued an urgent ASHTAM and operational advisory directing strict avoidance of ash-affected airspace, real-time route planning, and immediate reporting of any suspected encounters.
- Air India canceled 11–13 flights for precautionary checks, Akasa Air suspended services to Jeddah, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi, and KLM scrubbed its Amsterdam–Delhi rotation as delays built up in Delhi.
- The plume entered over Gujarat and tracked across Rajasthan, Delhi-NCR, Punjab and Haryana at 25,000–45,000 ft, with IMD indicating limited ground-level effects aside from hazy skies.
- IMD said the cloud should leave Indian airspace by around 7:30 pm Tuesday toward China, while routing constraints over Pakistan airspace added to disruptions for Indian carriers.
