Ethiopian Volcano Ash Cloud Disrupts Flights in India as DGCA Orders Reroutes

Forecasters expect limited surface impact with the high‑altitude plume clearing India by Tuesday evening.

Overview

  • Hayli Gubbi in Ethiopia erupted on Sunday for the first time in about 10,000 years, lofting ash and sulphur dioxide to roughly 10–15 km with some layers higher.
  • Tracking shows the plume entered India on Monday evening via Gujarat, moved over Rajasthan and DelhiNCR around 11 pm, and continued across Punjab and adjoining regions.
  • India’s aviation regulator issued an ASHTAM and directed strict avoidance of ash‑affected airspace, route and fuel replanning, and immediate reporting of any suspected ash encounters.
  • Air India cancelled 11 flights over Monday–Tuesday, Akasa Air suspended services to Jeddah, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi, KLM scrapped its AmsterdamDelhi round trip, and IndiGo cancelled or diverted select routes.
  • IMD said the plume is primarily aloft with hazy skies and minor visibility impacts expected, and forecast the cloud to exit Indian airspace toward China by around 7:30 pm Tuesday.
